My kid has more chromosomes than yours!

The final results are in (from the amniocentesis) and "G.I. Joe" has trisomy 21, a.k.a. down syndrome. I may be the happiest mom ever to receive such news. "They" say a mother's instinct is right, so knowing that something was not going to go to my plan (as before) I was much relieved we were/are not repeating the same chromosomal abnormality that Nathan faced (which was basically a death sentence for him).

A Few Facts for Starters:
According to the geneticist at the Maternal-Fetal Medicine clinic all the abnormalities all four of our children have had are completely unrelated. I guess God just likes to keeps things interesting at our house.

I, at age 30, had a 0.1% of having a baby with Down's.

Recent U.S. studies have shown that 84-91% of babies prenatally diagnosed with Down syndrome will be killed via abortion.

40% of babies with Down Syndrome will have congenital heart problems. They are also more likely to have Alzheimer's and Leukemia.

I found a good post for friends and family over at another blog today (also listed on my side bar under homeschool blogs): http://onajoyfuljourney.blogspot.com/2011/07/walking-alongside-family-living-with.html

So, our next child has designer genes. And for you who worry over EVERYTHING - Don't! Really, this kid is going to rock that third chromosome. He's going to be a complete blessing and joy - not only because he's my kid but because God says so, in His Word. He's going to teach us so much about love and acceptance. I can't wait to meet him come late November/early December.

Please continue to pray for us as we learn about the syndrome, and seek resources to help us help "G.I. Joe" reach his fullest potential. And please pray he is a healthy albeit chromosomally enhanced baby! Thanks!

Jean,
I'm so happy for you guys! Down's kiddos (excuse my non-pc language) are some of the sweetest kids I've ever met. Always smiling! (until their teen years, but who is then? :)
http://www.myspecialks.com/ This is the blog that a friend of mine has listed on her blog - I believe my friend treated her kiddo when she was at Vanderbilt. I've read it a few times over the years, they have amazing faith and are great people. This family has 5 kiddos, 2 with Downs (1 adopted)...anyway, just thought I'd pass it along.
If you want me to show you the infant massage or have any other questions let me know...I don't know that I'll be of help, or can tell you anything that you don't know, but I can be a listening ear :)
Love you guys!
Cara

Oh, Jean, I have chills reading your post. You are such a beautiful and faithful mother, and you will be a true gift to this new little one (as I know he will be to you and your family). I will share your joy and keep you in my prayers...

I am so overwhelmed by reading your blog post. God has certainly put "GI Joe" right where he needs to be. I have not a doubt in my mind that he will certainly rock that 3rd chromosome like no other!

Nick sees an amazing pediatric cardiologist at DeVos Children's Hospital named Dr. Lacina. If you end up needing to see a cardiologist, I would suggest him without hesitation. All of Nick's follow up care since his surgery at U of M has been with him and we have been very happy.

Jean...Praising God with you & am so thankful to once again get a glimpse of the heart God has placed within you to yearn for more of Him, to just do His will & serve Him and your family, come what may. Thanks for sharing your journey & perspective with us. God is so good & knows exactly what we need. You will be such a blessing to GI Joe & I know he will be a tremendous blessing to you guys too. Prayers will continue for you & baby boy. Much love & many prayers,

Congratulations! I saw a visitor came to my blog from yours, so I dropped by to say hello!
You're going to have SO. MUCH. FUN. with this little guy! There is a whole new world out there ready to support and encourage you. Your take on Down syndrome is amazing--the bonus chromosome has so many wonderful secrets, and clearly you are ready to experience the joy.
Praying for a good delivery and a healthy little boy. Throw out all preconceptions and expect him to excel--and he will!

Jeanie, I have been so behind with Facebook, and not being on the blog circuit, I was just recently told about the results of your amnio. My prayers will continue for the health and development of "G.I. Joe"! I love your spirit, Jean. Thank-you for being such an example to mothers and would-be mothers everywhere...praising God for ALL of His children being fearfully and wonderfully made! One of my very best friends from Nashville has a sister w/ Downs...I will have to connect the two of you. Love you Jean!

p.s. - I hope that name sticks because I wouldn't want Jonah (or me) to be disappointed.
